Lycia Thornburg, MD, FAAD, is a board-certified dermatologist who is passionate about the health of her patients’ skin and known for her dedication to cutting-edge research and compassionate patient care. One of her central focuses is educating patients about protecting their skin, thereby preventing and lessening dermatologic diseases.
Dr. Thornburg has been practicing dermatology in Rapid City, South Dakota, since 2003 and has become renowned for her wide-ranging expertise in general, laser, and aesthetic dermatology. Her clinical work reflects a deep commitment to the intersection of aesthetics and medical dermatology.
She serves on several national advisory boards for skincare, Botox, and filler, and she has spoken on industry topics on national stages. As a respected voice in the field, she serves as a national media expert for the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and appears on a bi-monthly television segment educating the public. Her articles have been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, in New Beauty, and on Byrdie.com.
In 2007, Dr. Thornburg founded the charity Made for Shade, a pioneering initiative aimed at protecting children from the harmful effects of sun exposure while promoting healthy outdoor activities. Her contributions extend to dermatological research, where she collaborates on groundbreaking studies evaluating cancer biomarkers through an inter-departmental research collaborative effort in her clinic.
Dr. Thornburg’s patient-care philosophy is as much about emotional well-being as it is about physical health. Inspired by Maya Angelou’s words “people will never forget how you made them feel,” she brings empathy and understanding to each patient interaction, creating a holistic approach that sets her apart in the world of dermatology.
Originally from Waukesha, Wisconsin, she received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Wyoming, received her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and completed her dermatology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Outside of her practice, Dr. Thornburg enjoys spending time with her husband and family, especially supporting her daughters in their endeavors.
